«Living Beings» | «ΕΜΒΙΑ ΟΝΤΑ»

The human body is made up of more than 100 trillion unique cells. Most interestingly, all these cells result from a single cell division, leading to a flurry of continuous multiplications. A cell is the smallest unit of life that can be classified as a living being.

This thriving and continuously evolving world of living beings is hidden; it cannot be observed with the naked eye, only through the use of a microscope. That is how I came across an ecosystem. The formations they create, their volume, mobility and evolution are just the beginning of a great inspiration that leads me to discover a further step: the fertilisation, the start point of new life.

«Living Beings: The Birth» | «ΕΜΒΙΑ ΟΝΤΑ: Η ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ»

Materials used for the artworks included in the sketchbook:  Mixed media such as graphite stick pencil, acrylic paint, coloured pencils, Pitt pastel coloured pencils, Pitt artist pens, crepe paper, stick & liquid glue, polymer clay, deco stones, etc.

Materials used for the Installation Art: A4 white - paper sketchbook, magnifying glass, a pair of white cotton gloves, white fabric, table.

About the Installation Art:  This interior Installation consists of a pure white sketchbook being placed in the middle of a table covered in white fabric. Two gloves are being laid on the left and right side of the sketchbook respectively. A magnifying glass is positioned on the left top corner of the table. The sketchbook remains open for viewing.

The viewer is a “living being” and as such, has an innate need to be curious, which translates into a need for exploring, observing, discovering and judging; an inherent need for mobility and emotions induced by stimulations. These needs are triggered by the installation and induce the viewer, either consciously or subconsciously, into the symbolisms that “white” give rise to: clarity, purity, spirituality, fertility, surgical operations, tools and medicines. The artwork itself sets the viewer, indirectly, into an experiencing process.

This video shows a spectator taking part in the creative process.

A camera has been placed on the ceiling - directly above the table on top of which the art installation lives. The camera records every interaction taking place into the room while projecting it simultaneously on a large screen, outside the room.

This process stimulates the viewer’s curiosity, courage and need to use his senses thus, leading to a dialogue between him and the artist. It also allows the spectator to engage with the artwork, provide his personal input and determine the final outcome. In this way, by using both body and mind the spectator activates and reveals the meaning of the installation and enables the artwork to fulfil its purpose.

«Seashell» | «ΚΟΧΥΛΙ»

The creation of this series of artworks was inspired by a beautifully coloured seashell which was washed ashore by the crystal-clear waters of a beach on my beloved home country, Cyprus. That is how this creative journey of inspiration started while making way to my next series of artworks «Origin», «Living Beings: The Birth» and «Living Beings».

«Origin» | «ΠΡΟΕΛΕΥΣΗ»

No form of art can be adequately explained with words. Words are simply useful indicators which help people avoid or resolve misunderstandings. Hence, words can only provide some minor indication of how the artist felt at the time of his creation.

The evolution of a seashell lies at the heart of the present series of artworks, which becomes more impulsive, resulting in a process of subtraction. The artist’s emotions are no longer described on the canvas but are taking place on it. The canvas ceases to be a place of simple reproduction of real or fictional objects, but a lively field of action of living beings. What the canvas portrays is not just a picture, is a series of facts!

The circle of life never comes to an end. The proof of this lies in places of decay: the real source of life. As a rule, genesis comes through death (germs, fungi, bacteria, etc.). At this point, I find myself questioning what is visible and invisible. When examining some elements under the detailed eye of a microscope, one can come across a variety of living forms which continuously expand and reproduce. This amazing and full of energy micrographic world cannot be seen by the “naked eye”.

On each canvas, these biological forms come alive, expand and evolve by their own needs. These forms multiply and reproduce, through different shapes, volume, line, texture and tone. They are creating magnetic fields that exert pull or thrust power on each other through magnetism. Numerous successive lines that reach an end and enter a new field, where the content now has the main role.

In this work, I present some of the artworks of the series “Origin”, which is the evolution of the series “Seashells”. Their dimensions range between 2-2.20m x 1.90-2m approximately.

«Limassol: A Psychogram» | «ΛΕΜΕΣΟΣ: ΨΥΧΟΓΡΑΦΗΜΑ»

Limassol: a city full of magic and fairy dust. A city that manages every time to touch me and complete me at the same time. A breath of her fresh sea air is enough to capture me within her magical world. Time stops as I look into her blue, with a light touch of purple, waves. It is like a dream!

I look carefully and realise that the salty waves gently caress the pebbles on the beautiful beach again and again, as if they were hands. The pebbles start to foam, and all this creates an incredible relaxing sound which sends shivers down my spine every single moment; a fact which unreservedly entices my mind.

Sitting on the beach next to some huge coastal rocks on a sandy hill, on a wooden bench, sketching the fishermen and the passersby. The sea and the intense colourful lights from sunrise until sunset are the integral elements of the sketches.

Welcome to my photographic world! All the photographs are dated between 2008 and the present, with noticeable common characteristics blooming all over. They are closely interrelated to my artworks, consciously or unconsciously, sharing the same ideas, themes, textures, and patterns. All photographs target various biological forms and interpretations of the life cycle, spreading and evolution of microorganisms, senses, movements and gradations between colours.

Photographs capture a moment that is gone forever, but all emotions are still alive in every single one of them.

Mosaics | ΨΗΦΙΔΩΤΑ

Mosaic Art also forms a significant part of my work. Mosaics are influenced intensely by biological forms of ecosystems, thus creating magnetic fields between the different elements of each one of them. All various forms perform a cyclic movement, which represents the notions of wholeness, eternity, and timelessness, like the circle of life itself. These forms develop gradually and evolve while triggering the diversity in their colour, the texture of tile and volume.

Also, mosaic artworks represent a different fold of my life: childhood.

Childhood means a heavenly life without obligations, a carefree life full of colours and pure, crystal-clear emotions. Everything is different when you’re a child: the trees are higher, the colours are brighter, and every new non-ending day is more interesting than the last. Even more importantly, unique moments stay in our memory forever. In the mosaics, all the childhood sweet memories spring back.
